UK Chancellor Darling Seeks to Shore Up British Economy With Caps, Cuts and Banker Bonus Tax
December 9, 2009 — UK Chancellor Alistair Darling “today announced a cap on teachers’ and doctors’ pay and raised national insurance contributions as he admitted the recession had hit the British economy harder than feared,” report Katie Allen and Kathryn Hopkins in The Guardian (UK).
“He also unveiled a punitive super-tax of 50% on the bonuses of tens of thousands of bankers – cash that will go to help the unemployed as Labour seeks to shore up support ahead of next year’s election.”
